I would like to add that the corruption in the panel has been partly
resolved (atleast for the last five days) by locking the indicator
applet and other applets to the panel (although it did not work for
Andreas). I do not know if it was a case of doing it in a particular
order because I was too frustrated while trying to fix it and just tried
a bunch of different things!

The problem now is that in case I have a power management option that
calls for displaying the battery icon only when charging etc then the
space allocated for the battery icon in the panel is left blank and the
icons are not readjusted so that they are properly spaced once again. I
can confirm that the blank space is in between the Date and weather
applet and the rest of the indicator icons leading me to suspect that it
is a simple problem of the initial positioning of the icons when the
panel comes up that is causing this.
