I have this same problem in combination with the following: If I change the theme of the login screen, kubuntu will not get to it, but will freeze instead at the kubuntu logo. When I try to logout, restart or shytdown from the K Menu, the system does nothing. When I type "sudo shutdown now" or "sudo reboot" at the console terminal, the system does poweroff, but a blue very low res screen is shown with some messy data on it.
