Same problem here with my motherboard (Asrock 775 Dual-VSTA). As soon as I try to record or adjust the input level of the microphone, the device disappears from the sound applet. I have to log out from my session to get the sound back. I'm using Lucid 32bit and I had the same problem with Karmic (but not with Jaunty where my microphone worked just fine). Aside from the microphone problem, the sound output works just fine.
