Michael: I suspect this is a problem somewhere inbetween gnome-screensaver/gnome-power-manager/Xorg . Can you spin your problem off into a bug of its and subscribe me to it so I remember to follow up? It may also be useful to know what "xset q" says along with whether your screen goes blank or is actually turned off..
