This seems to be the problem: %lshal -l -u /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_backlight udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_backlight' [..] laptop_panel.brightness_in_hardware = true (bool)
Thus PowerDevil/Solid only register the brightness key presses but don't actually set the brightness as they expect the hardware to do this.
