To continue my Comment #123, the French user reports (here:
http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=3520937) that :
- Gnome has problem with its panel and its notification zone (indicator-applet)
when the icons inside indicator-applet have to change their aspect (often
network and battery).
-As soon as there is a change with the icons inside the indicator-applet, the
bug happens at next boot.
- Unactivate wifi allowed him to solve the bug. But when he changed to wire
network, the icon changes again, and the bug comes back.
- he thinks that the bug generally disappears when you extend the notification
zone, and/or increase the width (>24 pixels) of the panel (he tested ~20 boots
in different modes: connected, disconnected, battery, ...). The only problem of
this workaround is that icons are not placed regularly...
- he thinks there is a random factor due to compiz (sometimes
"Close/Maximize.>" buttons and shadow effects disappear)

** Also affects: indicator-applet
   Importance: Undecided
       Status: New
