I am affected too but I did dist-upgrade from 09.10. It is a regression for me. '~$ uname -a; Linux T43 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 22:02:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux' After a reboot alsamixer shows the Master volume control muted. De-muting it and advancing this volume control solves the problem for me.
