In an upstream bug for Banshee https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=620461 there's a workaround to avoid the crash at startup by (re)moving the banshee notification indicator
sudo mv /usr/lib/banshee-1/Extensions/Banshee.Notification* ~/ This workaround makes it possible to play audio (music) but Banshee still crashes for videos.
