I reformatted to ext2 and tried again. Same issue in the multicard reader, however no problems using the usb adapter. I did have a problem with the usb adapter, but I am wondering if that was genuine corruption as I can no longer re-produce the problem.
I will reformat in the camera (Casio Exilim) which is original FAT, AFAIR: I have copied back the original pics plus a few others that I created with the camera to get the right folder structure.
