I have same problem I am running Ubuntu 10.4 I have an 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller on a Vaio VGC-V174RB. The only way I can boot is if I hold shift to get the Grub menu and edit the boot commands by replacing quiet splash by nomodeset, otherwise it freezes at startup... It runs 800x600 Monitor Preferences doesn't recognize my display.. I tried all the above nothing works.
