I have the same issue. I have an old Fujitsu-Siemens C-1020 laptop with a Savage Pro graphic card. Also I've noticed that the /etc/default/grub file is missing. Everything is working fine with the exception of restart or shutting down the machine. I'll try the F1 key trick to see if is any difference.
