*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 87486 *** Is this really a duplicate of #87486? That bug discusses a crash, this one describes what seems to be the "normal" behaviour on an unsupported video card.
Anyway, I get the white screen problem too, on one machine what an ancient 8Mb Matrix card, and also in VirtualBox. It seems to clear after about 15 - 20 seconds, presumably have detected a failure and reverted in the same way that happens when you change screen resolutions. However, it doesn't display any initial message to say this is what is going to happen, and in the time it takes the user might easily give up, reset the machine, etc. I suggest it does exactly the same as the screen resolution applet - raise a dialog *before* enabling the desktop effects to say "This may not work .. if your display goes blank, wait 20 seconds and it will be restored." This is still happening on the fesity beta CD, BTW (d-e ver. 0.7.1-0ubuntu3) -- "Desktop Effect" blow out the display https://launchpad.net/bugs/89466 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
