Thanks for the tip. I found out how to add this parameter, and now it does indeed boot!
Now that I can boot the system, how can I find out what's going wrong when the nomodeset parameter is not set? By the way, I don't know if this is related, but now that I can boot I can't start X. I installed xfce4 and its dependencies and tried startx but when I do the system hangs with a flashing caps lock and scroll lock light on the keyboard.
