The best way to open a program with root privileges is to use "gksu
package" so "gksu synaptic" try this and see if you still get the crash.
Also in the future the best way to report a bug is to run the command
"ubuntu-bug packagename", this will attach alot of relevant information
about your system to help fix the bug. Could you please add this
information to this bug by running the command "apport-collect 594691"?

synaptic wont run as su/sudo. causing segmentation fault as su. and as regular
user it opens and wont let me update anything (needs su)
