I have the same issue, and I've noticed that I lacked the "Display
Controller" (is this why I can't change the brightness?) that David
Boersma has in his lspci, mine reads:

Also, my brightness file is located in a different directory called
GFX0. I tried changing this file, but the display brightness isn't
changed.
