I suppose there is no grub file in /etc/default because after an upgrade you 
still use the old grub. 
I have the same shutdown problem. I changed the boot commandline from "quiet 
splash" to "quiet acpi=force" and this helps 8 out of 10 times. But still, 
sometimes the acpi of my system (AMD64, 1 year old) is not recognized.
I think this is a serious problem.
