Tried the kernel http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/linux-image-2.6.35-999-generic_2.6.35-999.201006151505_i386.deb as described in the link posted by Jeremy Foshee. The wifi did not work with this kernel so I was unable to stay using it to see if the crashing on mains power occurred (This is my only computer), however I can say that it displayed a much longer life for the fully charged battery: 6 hours vs 2:30 hours under the current Lucid kernel - this is the same life that it gives under windows 7.
