Well I thought it was fixed w/ 2.6.34, but only better. Changing dirty_writeback_centisecs etc. as per qwerty w/ 2.6.34 seems to have stoped the ata resets etc. w/via epia-en Disk wasn't locking up, just reduced to super slow mode. ~15mb/s.
