Same problem with ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso (tried multiple CD-Rs, albeit of same brand). Maddeningly intermittent and then not, as #51 notes: I was able to install just fine on this machine last week, and now that I'm reinstalling from scratch the installer loops endlessly with the message:
