I am using a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop, graphics card is ATI Mobility
Radeon 9000.

Hibernate and thaw works. Suspend works, but screen does not turn on
upon resume - this is the bug I am reporting.

How to reproduce the bug:
1. At a terminal, type: "sudo pm-suspend". Laptop goes into suspend, power
indicator fades on and off, which is a normal indication of suspend.
2. Press the power button to attempt a resume. Laptop power indicator turns on,
hard disk activity indicator flashes once. Laptop fan turns on. Screen does not
turn on - i.e. neither the backlight nor the LCD turns on.
3. At this point when the screen did not turn on. I pressed the Caps Lock and
Num Lock keys, but neither the Caps Lock nor Num Lock indicators turned on. I
tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F7, nothing happened. Ctrl-Alt-Del, nothing happened. I
pressed and held the power button for about 10 seconds, and the system reset.

Workaround:
I went to the BIOS and set a primary password. This password would be required
upon bootup before getting to the GRUB2 screen. When there was a password set,
resuming would cause the screen to turn on and the laptop to request for the
password. Upon entering the correct password, the desktop would be shown and
everything would function as normal.

What did not work:
I tried this command to suspend it, but it did not cause the screen to turn on.
Symptoms were the same as before:
sudo pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode --quirk-dpms-on
--quirk-vbe-post --quirk-vbestate-restore
(The command was suggested by
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pm-utils/+bug/417599 )

Other information:
I followed the steps on this page to try and debug the problem:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
These were the relevant lines I got from dmesg:
[ 0.547638] Magic number: 0:53:725
[ 0.547642] hash matches
/build/buildd/linux-2.6.32/drivers/base/power/main.c:433
[ 0.547667] block loop5: hash matches
[ 0.547739] pci 0000:01:00.0: hash matches
[ 0.547812] rtc_cmos 00:06: setting system clock to 2048-05-07 08:42:44 UTC
(2472453764)
[ 0.547817] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found

So the problem was with PCI device 0000:01:00.0. Looking at lspci, this was the
problematic device:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility
FireGL 9000] (rev 02)

Hope the above helps.
