Since external speaker worked and internal does not, I suspect it
could be a configuration problem ie, kernel + userspace component all
ok....so how about this:

For your case:

1.   copy the conf file out (since u have installed the backports.
2.   deinstall the backport alsa module, and reinstall the latest alsa
modules.
3.   And modify the conf file to use the same parameter as that of the
backport version.

Perhaps I may be wrong somewhere...but u can give it a try?
