I found that I have the same problem yesterday. I do not need my printer as much but I think when I install Lucid (fresh install) printing worked. I was very surprised when there was no printer in my kmail printing dialog yesterday. I tried the workaround in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/543506/comments/83 and until now that seems to work. But I have to say that I have done only about 5 boots since yesterday.
