This occurs for me on 10.04 using the same VIA VT1708S. The workaround above works great for me.
Please note however that the upcoming alsa drivers (in maverick) may have even worse issues. Using Fedora 13, I am unable to get sound from plugging in any devices (speakers/headphones). You can also test this by installing alsa backports on 10.04. I plan on filing a different bug if alsa in maverick has this issue.
