Well, network-manager updated yesterday, and things changed. Now my ethernet 
works, but the wireless no longer turns on if I unplug the ethernet. And I see 
no icon on my top task bar any more to access the network things.
I unhooked the ethernet and rebooted. I am using the B43 driver. The blue light 
is on. But no wireless. I tried turning the wireless off with the switch. That 
worked, but it would not restart. Plugging in the Ethernet did NOT turn on eth0.

I can't figure out how to access network-manager.

I sent the apport-collect report in.

I tried to look at the log files with gedit, and got the following error 
message, which kep repeating:
GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are 
that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS 
locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for 
information. (Details -  1: Failed to get connection to session: Failed to
