I've done some minor investigation and it seems that while the LED is blue, my wifi is connected at 48Mb/s (according to 'iwconfig'). After a while of being idle it drops to 1Mb/s and the LED turns orange. If I use the network again (e.g. ping), then speed returns to 48Mb/s and the LED turns back to blue!
