well, I guess plymouth just isn't running at all, but don't know why.  Please 
try running it by hand from a running system:
- switch to VT1
- log in as root (or run sudo -s)
- shut down X (service gdm stop)
- start plymouth manually, by running:  plymouthd --mode=boot --no-daemon 
--debug
- if this doesn't exit with an error, background the process (^Z; bg) and then 
start the splash screen by running: plymouth show-splash
- switch back to VT1 again and run 'plymouth quit' to exit, and 'service gdm 
start' to restore X.
