Matthew Holtz, I guess you're right, this would still be a problem on netbooks. Hopefully someone will mark this as confirmed.
I've been playing around with different settings. Adding commit=60, to the partition's entry in fstab increases the interval to 30-45 seconds. No solution yet. What hard disk are you using?
