I'm going to convert this to a support question, because it seems to be
more of a configuration issue.

You will not be able to connect two computer directly to each other with
the same cable that you would use to connect a computer to a router. You
need a crossover cable, as opposed to the typical straight-through
cable. If you don't get link lights on the network cards when you
connect the cable between the computers, this is probably the problem.
