Public bug reported:

In fooling around trying to find the source of another issue I manually
unloaded my snd* modules (using modprobe -r), and now they don't come up
automatically and I have to load them manually every boot. I'm fairly
certain I used to be able to mess with modprobe without it breaking
stuff permanently... so this is probably some bug I've tripped over.
