Thanks I was just about to report back. Yes mutter was stuck on the gnome-shell version despite ppa-purge
As well as the 3 mutter packages I had to also downgrade libgirepository1.0-0 gir1.0-freedesktop Which were stuck on the gnome-shell versions.
