Please close this bug report. My issue was resolved. I reverted back to
Karmic and re-upgraded Lucid. This time everything worked perfectly. I
think what happened the first time is that the person who upgraded chose
to keep old configuration files during the upgrade without checking them
against the updated configuration files. This may have resulted in
faulty configuration files which lead to disastrous results. I am
guessing that other issues with Lucid upgrades may be caused by this
same issue of keeping old configuration files during the upgrade when
the new ones should be replacing the old ones. The default during the
upgrade is to keep the old ones. Perhaps more documentation or a warning
needs to be added to the upgrade pages regarding this?

Thanks.
