I have exactly the same problem and reinstalling firefox did not help. It started when i upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. Symptoms: firefox hangs (not responding and colored bw by compiz) for about 30 seconds before any firefox dialog or popup opens. After about 30 seconds it works normally. While hanging no CPU or memory activity from firefox process at all.
