Hi, I tried an identical drive (they were bought on the same day) and the second one works fine.
On the other hand, my drive which fails in karmic works fine on a lucid laptop and also there under Windows. So in my case it seems to be a hardware problem in relation to the *specific* combination of USB disk and the intel mainboard D945GCLF2.
