Public bug reported:

While upgrading the kernel from version ...12 to version ...13, the
update manager threw an uncompatibility problem with mscompress.
Applying the update once again seemed to have solved the problem.

After restarting the computer, the x-server did not start.  I solved the
problem by uninstalling nvidia-glx and changing the device name (from
'nvidia' to 'nv') in xorg.conf.
