Further update. I went out and bought an HDMI cable as my new TV has HDMI. I've just booted my laptop on the current Lucid kernel and plugged it into my TV using HDMI. The supported screen resolutions are detected and the display on the TV is rock solid.
So it looks like it's a VGA output issue.
