Public bug reported:

I can't use pkexec to launch any graphical applications. Output example:

de...@delan:~$ pkexec /usr/sbin/synaptic

(synaptic:4152): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
de...@delan:~$

If I set the $DISPLAY variable it still doesn't work:

de...@delan:~$ pkexec bash
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

r...@delan:~# DISPLAY=:0 /usr/sbin/synaptic
No protocol specified

(synaptic:4166): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
r...@delan:~#

However gksu-polkit works:

de...@delan:~$ gksu-polkit /usr/sbin/synaptic
de...@delan:~$

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
