I can confirm the same problem on feisty beta. Aside from very slow
login, two panel applets, namely CPUFreqApplet and WeatherApplet, would
fail to start, when there is no wired network connection.

The tip in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/69941/comments/6 works for
me. Well, I removed the hostname from the 127.0.0.1 line in /etc/hosts
myself shortly after upgrading to feisty, considering that the hostname
is resolvable on DNS. :-/

Without the hostname in /etc/hosts, Gnome is much slower, even if there
is network connection. For example, new gnome-terminal tabs shows up
with a second's delay after Ctrl-Shift-T is pressed. I had "host name
lookup failure on localhost" in .xsession-errors as well.

After putting back the hostname to /etc/hosts, everything returns to
normal.
