This happens EVERY time syncdaemon runs now.  It's getting hung on
something, perhaps, but either way, it's leaking like a sieve and
chewing up enormous amounts of ram... I've let it get as high as 3GB out
of 4GB total.  Now I just immediately kill UbuntuOne as soon as I boot
the system.

Is there ANY traction at all on this? The only step I have left at this
point is to just give up on U1 and purge all the packages...  It's a
nice idea, and seemed pretty cool, but at this point, it's utterly
unusable and actually degrades system performance to the point where the
system itself is unusable.
