This looks like a firmware issue. A multitouch N-Trig device should
register a "MultiTouch" device with X. The X log posted in comment #3
does not mention any "MultiTouch" device. I have seen this once before
on a similar N-Trig device. The solution was to fully update to the
latest firmware available from the laptop vendor. I would look for a
firmware update from Dell in this instance.

Unfortunately, the firmware updates are Windows executable files. There
is no way to update the firmware in Linux yet.

I am moving the bug report to Invalid as it's not really an issue with
the Ubuntu kernel.
