I've got a feeling that this might be more to do with wpa_supplicant. Also, and I don't know how relevant this is, when I downloaded 2.6.20-10 I noticed I suddenly had the restricted drivers manager package. I'm just throwing a few ideas as to what changed at the time network-manager stopped working. I have also installed the wpagui package which makes for interesting reading if you run it when network-manager is trying to connect.
