I have this with Lucid (10.4) Xubuntu it is a fresh install and because of the problems I was having I did a text based install.
I tried removing the 2 files in /var/lib/dbus and I was able to start dbus, but starting gdm still gives me a blank screen. Also at next reboot the dbus problem returns.
