OK - more checks ... in the course of which something reset itself ... Switching to other accounts and back showed they were unaffected. They still had the high res options.. Browsing hidden files in home of the affected account (the first user created and the user first logged on to after updating) looking at those updated recently revealed nothing of interest. Right click desktop to change background displayed choices but selecting one had no effect. Theme install (never done that before) with my already preferred clearview still selected was cancelled when it asked for s directory. Visual effects (currently None) asked for drivers when changed to Normal mode, then went into a flashing loop when cancelled from not being able to find them. Eventually stopped - not sure what I did to stop it. Selected a new background. New background looked good. Went back to Preferences-Monitor and found the big list now available ???

Latest logs uploaded in case they help. When it happens (which is often enough to be really irritating) this bug is a real turn-off for any user who is not totally committed to Ubuntu. It is particularly difficult for Windows users to understand - because it never happens to them! FWIW I suspect it is hardware dependent (a suspicion, not a conviction) - possibly a video card issue. Part of the reason I use an old- fashioned 'synch-to-almost-anything' CRT monitor. -- Reduced screen resolution choices after update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
