OK, I found the way, how to update thunderbird correctly.
In Ubuntu it is necessary to leave the old version installed.
Then install this Repository including the key.
Then run the Update and Dist-upgrade.
Afterwards, it is necessary to install these additionally packages from
Synaptic:
* thunderbird
3.1.2+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd~lucid
* thunderbird-3.1
3.1.3~hg20100820r5774+nobinonly~0ubuntu1~umd1~lucid
* thunderbird-3.1-gnome-support
3.1.3~hg20100820r5774+nobinonly~0ubuntu1~umd1~lucid
But one problem remains. The language paks for german and perhaps other
languages are incompatible with this new version of thunerbird!!!
The language-pack needs update.
Also the new lightning-version is downloded directly with the installation
of the new thudnerbirdversion. Now thunderbird starts normal and shows up.
So far to say: if you want to update your thunderbird, do not uninstall
this package: thunderbird 3.1.2+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1~lucid.
If this package is removed, then it comes to this error of yesterday and
installation fails!! So perhaps the installation-instructions should also
be corrected in this point.
