Sorry to re-open an old bug, not sure whether I should be doing this,
but I'm having this same issue on Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

I've just set up dual-monitors on a laptop with ATI graphics, and since
doing this, nautilus appears to hang on start up as the OP has
described.  Can't right click on the wallpaper, can't open file browser,
and my machine is constantly processing.
