Sorry for not closing this earlier. The problem was that I had my "number of open connections" preference in Deluge set very high, higher than libtorrent could handle. It was crashing presumably because it hadn't checked whether the files it was opening were actually being opened, but it was actually failing to open files because it was running into the ulimit.
