Compiled on Aug 26 2010 for kernel 2.6.32-24-generic (SMP).

seems like it updated to the latest.  i can't find alsaconf command
though...don't know if that's necessary.

it seemed to be a bit better after a reboot, but is now back to exactly the
same behavior.  when i adjust volume from an application (such as rhythmbox)
it kills the sound, and i can only hear crackling.  i can sometimes get the
sound to come back by starting the command line alsa mixer, adjusting the
volume a bit, closing the mixer and going back to the audio program i was
using.
