one possible culprit from your ps aux list is

root      1909  0.0  0.0   1816   672 ?        S    17:38   0:00
/usr/sbin/hddtemp -d -l 127.0.0.1 -p 7634 -s | /dev/sg0 /dev/sda

But this should really only read from the device, not write to it. I
didn't see anything obvious which would open /dev/sda in write mode.

Do you still have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04.1? If so, can you
please give me the output of

 sudo fuser -v /dev/sda

while this is happening?
