I'm having a similar problem after an update I installed this morning I'm
running Kubuntu Lucid with kernel 2.6.32-24-generic (64bit)
In my case the issue involves my usb mouse and keyboard. I've checked and the
keyboard an mouse are working in the bios but then are deactivated when linux
boots.

As a workaround I've had to add a ps2 keyboard and mouse to get past the
login screen. Then if I wait a couple of minutes the mouse ad kbd are
enable.

Based on the syslog (att.) it looks to me like the usb HID drivers
aren't being loaded until a bit more that 2 minutes after I begin the
boot process.
