Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

1. Update manager error message. Appeared after clean install of 9.10
while the Update Manager was reading packages:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another
process using it?
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

2. Pressed <OK>.

Update manager continued as normal.

Selected 312 Updates.

3. Restarted machine on prompt after update completed.

4. Ran Update Manager again.

5. The following error appeared after putting in password on prompt by
the Update Manager:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to
correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I am going to continue with the Update Manager process but fear there
may be something seriously wrong with my installation.

I have done this installation many times before on this very machine and
I cannot recall this error happening before.
