OK. I am giving up for today to try and reproduce this with the 'log out' applet. It has given no error after an hour of intensive switching. I will use it from now and give feedback if the problem reproduces.
I forgot to mention that the original bug reported is intermittent. I am noticing a difference between switching users from the 'log out' applet and the 'Switch from....' function in the indicator applet: 'Switch from... ' first brings up a gui log in window (for about 1second in the old style without the user avatars) for the user that I am switching from before showing up the gui user selector with avatars.
